Marcus Rashford double sinks Tottenham as Manchester United climbs to 6th position in Premier league table
Manchester United fans celebrated a 2-0 victory over a Tottenham Hotspur in the 15th round of the Premier League on Tuesday.
LONDON (Reuters) - The game kicked off on Wednesday evening 4-12-2019, at Old
Trafford, a stronghold of the Red Devils in Manchester.
The match saw England striker Marcus Rashford brilliantly
scored a double and threatened Tottenham goalkeepers with both breakthroughs
and long-range shots. United last season.
As the first half of the game began, Rashford opened the
scoring in the 7th minute with a shot from inside the box that Gazanica failed
to tackle, netting the ball with a hysterical joy at Old Trafford.
In the 38th minute, Tottenham leveled the equalizer through
the English international Delly Allie, who tamed the ball inside the penalty
area wonderfully dribbled Fred and towards the ball from the area.
As the second half began, the referee awarded a 47th-minute
penalty to Manchester United to add a second goal for the Manchester United.Manchester United moved up to sixth with 21 points, equal to
seventh-placed Crystal Palace, just two points behind fifth-placed
Wolverhampton. Tottenham, meanwhile, dropped to eighth on 20 points.
Manchester United and Tottenham have seen Jose Mourinho
return to Old Trafford, after he was sacked in December 2018. Since taking over
at Tottenham Hotspur, Tottenham have won all three of their matches so far,
winning two Premier League wins and a third in the Champions League, but have
now fallen to Manchester United with their first defeat.
According to reuters Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli
says it may have been a combination of “arrogance and over-confidence” that
caused his side’s 2-1 defeat by Manchester United in the Premier League on
Wednesday.
Spurs came into the match after winning three consecutive
matches on the bounce under new manager Jose Mourinho but failed to build on
that drive at fortress of Old Trafford.
Marcus Rashford put United ahead but a piece of technical
brilliance from Alli brought Spurs level, only for a 49th-minute Rashford
penalty to secure the three points for the hosts.
“We had to match their energy. We lost the game not by them
outplaying us - just attitude,” Alli told reporters. “We weren’t hungry enough
and we were slow to every second ball, losing 50-50s.
While Jose Mourinho conceded his former club Manchester
United had deserved their 2-1 Premier League victory over his new team
Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday and hailed the performance of Marcus Rashford.
Mourinho took over as Spurs manager last month, nearly a
year after he was fired by United.
“I think they deserved the victory by their first half. We
didn’t start well at all,” said Mourinho, whose side fell behind to a
seventh-minute goal from Rashford.
“I think for the first 30 minutes they were the best team,
and I think because of that, for this strong 30 minutes where we were not
there, and also because of the way we conceded the second goal, I think they
deserved to win,” he added.
Mourinho noted that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, held by
Aston Villa and Sheffield United in their last two league games, had delivered
their best displays against the top-rated teams.
“United results against the best teams this season have been
good. Chelsea, Liverpool, Leicester,” he said.
“For the way they play it is easier for them. They are not
afraid to have a defensive approach. It is easier for them against better
teams, against teams who want more of the ball,” he added.
The Portuguese, sacked by United after two and a half
seasons in charge, had plenty of praise for his former forward Rashford.
“When he plays from the left he is really dangerous and I
knew that and gave the players the best information about it. His first goal is
a typical Rashford goal coming on the inside. Our boys knew that clearly,” he
said.
Solskjaer was unsurprisingly even more fulsome in his praise
of the 22-year-old England international, who delivered a performance of real
quality.
“It’s the best he’s had under me. He was mature, strong
against good Premier League players,” the Norwegian said.
“It’s like he was back on the playground or in the back
garden. We want them to have fun, there’s nothing dangerous out there - just
75,00 people, wanting to see the best,” he said.
With some questioning Solskjaer after the club’s worst start
to a season since 1988-89, the win which moved United up to sixth, was a major
boost.
“The three points are massive for us. We’ve had too many
draws this season and given too many points away from winning positions,”
Solskjaer said.
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Scott McTominay has become virtually “undroppable” after the midfielder produced another dominant display in Wednesday’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.Scott McTominay was unstoppable
McTominay returned from more than three weeks on the sidelines with an ankle injury to patrol the midfield area alongside Fred as United, who drew their last two Premier League games, claimed all three points at Old Trafford.
Marcus Rashford scored twice for the home side but it was McTominay who stole the show.
“You can almost say he is undroppable at the moment,” Solskjaer told reporters.
“The physical presence he gives us, the leadership he gives us in midfield, he also releases Fred.”
Spurs manager Jose Mourinho, who gave McTominay his breakthrough at United, said the Scottish midfielder was the difference between the two sides.
“They had more emotion than us,” the Portuguese coach said. “You see for example, McTominay’s performance ... he was dominant. He was dominant.”
